Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

Periodontal disease is a common but serious infection of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It begins when bacteria in dental plaque accumulate along and beneath the gumline, causing inflammation of the gum tissue. In its early stage, known as gingivitis, symptoms may include redness, swelling, and bleeding when brushing or flossing.

If left untreated, gum disease can progress to periodontitis, where the infection spreads deeper below the gumline and begins to destroy the bone and connective tissue that support the teeth. This can lead to gum recession, deep periodontal pockets, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. Research has also shown a connection between periodontal disease and systemic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation throughout the body.

Our goal is to diagnose and treat periodontal disease early, using modern therapies that eliminate infection, reduce inflammation, and help preserve your natural teeth.

Scaling and root planing
SCALING AND ROOT PLANING
(DEEP CLEANING)

Scaling and root planing is the most common and effective non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. This procedure involves carefully removing plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria from below the gumline where regular brushing and routine cleanings cannot reach.

During scaling, deposits are removed from the tooth surfaces and periodontal pockets. Root planing then smooths the root surfaces of the teeth, helping the gum tissue reattach and making it more difficult for bacteria to accumulate again. This treatment reduces inflammation, decreases pocket depths, and helps stop the progression of periodontal disease.

Laser-assisted periodontal treatment
LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY

Laser-assisted periodontal treatment is a modern approach used to target and reduce bacteria by targeting diseased tissue with concentrated light energy. Dental lasers allow for precise removal of diseased tissue and bacterial infection while preserving healthy surrounding tissue.

Laser therapy can help reduce inflammation, promote healing, and improve the effectiveness of periodontal treatment when combined with scaling and root planing. Many patients appreciate that laser treatment can be comfortable and minimally invasive.

Local Antibiotic THERAPY

In some cases, additional antibacterial treatment is recommended to help eliminate infection in deeper periodontal pockets. After scaling and root planing, a localized antibiotic medication may be placed directly into the infected areas around the teeth.

Medications such as Arestin (minocycline HCL) or PerioStōm release antibiotics slowly over time, targeting the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease. This localized therapy helps reduce harmful bacteria, support healing of the gum tissue, and improve overall treatment outcomes.
