Untreated sleep apnea affects much more than the quality of your rest – it can damage your personal relationships, your health, and your overall quality of life as well. Many people don’t realize that dentists can offer valuable assistance with this condition, but it’s true! At Desert Vista Dental, patients can receive the informed knowledge and treatment they need to regain their wellbeing and wake up feeling ready for the day.

Diagnostic Help

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when a patient’s airway becomes partially or fully blocked during rest, resulting in a dangerous lack of oxygen. Because of this, the brain is forced to awaken the patient to readjust and reestablish airflow. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include the following:

  • Loud, chronic snoring
  • Constant daytime exhaustion/fatigue
  • Problems with memory and/or concentration
  • Morning headaches
  • Morning dry throat
  • Gasping and snorting during sleep (check with your bed partner)

Here in Scottsdale, our dental team can help identify patient’s risk for sleep apnea alongside your general physician or sleep specialist. Our state-of-the-art GALILEOS cone beam scanner gives us an in-depth view of the oral airway and sinuses, providing valuable information that may point towards the need for further treatment.

Oral Appliance Therapy

While CPAP treatment may still be the treatment of choice for many sleep apnea patients, others aren’t able to tolerate the associated bulky machinery and uncomfortable facial mask on a daily basis. Our team can offer an alternative – oral appliance therapy. This customized device is convenient and comfortable, slightly repositioning the jaw and/or tongue during sleep so that the airway stays clear. Oral appliance therapy and traditional CPAP therapy can also be combined in some cases for even more successful results.

Dental technology

At Desert Vista Dental, our team of doctors and staff members works hard to create a warm, comfortable atmosphere where patients can feel at ease. We’re dedicated to pursuing continuing education and new developments in the dental field whenever possible, which is why our two modern offices are outfitted with technology that’s designed to make your visits smoother, safer, and more successful overall.

Intraoral Camera

When it comes to matters of oral health, many patients feel left in the dark. Intraoral cameras can be a big help in making your dental care with our team easier to understand. These pen-sized cameras are comfortably inserted into the mouth, sending crystal-clear images to a nearby monitor for easy viewing. This allows our doctors to identify problematic areas and explain potential treatment options with an informational visual, helping patients look forward to a better, brighter smile with more confidence.

Digital imaging

Here in Scottsdale, AZ, our team is proud to offer your family an all-digital office atmosphere where dental care is convenient, safe, and exceptionally effective. In addition to digital radiography, we also utilize a state-of-the-art GALILEOs 3D Cone Bean Scanner to create panoramic, comprehensive representations of your mouth and facial structures. This is extremely helpful when our doctors need to observe the precise positioning of certain teeth and plan complex treatments like dental implant placement.

Digital impression System

Most patients are definitely familiar with the traditional, “goopy” impression materials dentists use to create models for restorative and orthodontic procedures – in fact, you may have even gagged on it once or twice. At Desert Vista Dental, we’ve transformed this process for the better by incorporating digital impression technology with CEREC. In addition to improved comfort, our team doesn’t have to worry about accidental distortion or inaccuracy with digital impressions, which reduces the need for time-consuming remakes.

Soft Tissue Laser

Instead of relying on traditional, invasive tools for soft tissue procedures, our team uses The Odyssey® Diode Laser to treat periodontal disease and remove excess gum tissue. With this technology, your procedure is so precise that we’re able to maintain more healthy tissue and keep bleeding at an absolute minimum – most patients don’t even need sutures! The instant sterilization of the laser also reduces the recovery period, all while helping patients remain comfortable and at ease.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Does the thought of visiting the dentist make you nervous or scared? Nitrous oxide is a safe sedation method that helps patients feel more relaxed and at ease during necessary treatment. The gas is administered through a mask that fits over the nose, and the calming effects should begin quickly. Once the mask is removed, you’ll recover just as fast, which means you can return to work, go back to school, or even drive yourself home without any inconvenient downtime.
